Extensive research has been conducted on MXene, a promising two-dimensional material for energy storage. However, conventional analytical techniques are unable to fully analyse MXene materials. In particular, the oxidation characteristics and precise analysis of surface termination properties, internal layered structure ions, and impurities of MXene remain unresolved. In order to address these challenges, our research team synthesised Ti3C2Tx MXene and employed Atom Probe Tomography (APT) for its analysis. The material was found to contain alkali elements, namely lithium (Li) and sodium (Na), in addition to halogen elements, including chlorine (Cl) and fluorine (F). Following oxidation, these alkali impurities were found in abundance within the TiO2 nanowires, indicating the potential for their influence on material activity during catalytic evaluation and subsequent performance degradation. This study not only exemplifies the sophisticated material analysis capabilities of APT, enabling atomic-level 3D analysis, but also advances the understanding of performance degradation causes in MXene materials.
