Well-defined homogeneous plasmonic nanostructures are imperative to localize light and to use it for scientific interest and practical applications. In that sense, physical synthesis of nanoparticles by top-down routes, in which materials are vacuum deposited in a nanopatterned polymer template, allows massive synthesis by a batch-type process and exquisite control over material composition, multilayer structure, particle size, and shape. In this presentation, I demonstrate that various shapes of plasmonic nanoparticles can be obtained by simple adjustment of incidence angle of deposited materials. Using nanoimprint lithography and oblique-angle-deposition, two dimensional gold nanodisks and three dimensional Petri-dish-shaped gold nanoparticles could be synthesized as well as their intermediate forms. Since it is possible to yield artificially designed plasmonic nanostructures with their unique light absorption/scattering properties, it is expected that the proposed method will be useful to prepare various nanoprobes for bio-medical imaging and plasmonic sensors for molecular-level detection.
